In collaboration with FB Environmental, Acorn completed the civil engineering and site design of the multiple stormwater management measures located at the Russell Road stormwater retrofit site in Skowhegan. The project, funded by the EPA, aimed to rehabilitate the water quality within one of Maine's wild trout streams within a watershed identified as urban impaired. The stream collected runoff from a land area of approximately 300 acres, with a large portion being comprised of high-use impervious area in an urban environment.
Stormwater runoff is the main pollutant of the watershed; this fact emphasized the need for the implementation of Best Management Practices (BMP’s) to slow down, filter, and cool runoff before discharge into the stream, which ultimately flows into Kennebec River. Stakeholder involvement included close communication with Town employees, the Technical Advisory Committee, and earthwork contractors. Project responsibilities included development of the project drawings and reports, stormwater analyses, submission of permit applications, bidding assistance, and construction administration. Rehabilitation efforts were designed and constructed in general conformance with the 60-page Whitten Brook Restoration Plan approved and mandated by the Maine DEP.
